I stuck to the book and reinstalled thhe latest of PAM and Shadow from the cureent website book and that worked I was using the new shadow with an older version of PAM. So now when I do a startx it works, it opens up the gui, but when I manually start gdm it shows the same black screen with the clock cursor... Thanks for all your help so far really appreciate it...
