Hi Fernando, Thanks a lot for the new, wonderful attempt to help me. I know your heart is in the right place and your mind too. (that's in stark contrast to mine which is never in the right place)
No matter how you cut it, how I cut it or how the rest of the mankind cuts it, there are a few immovable facts: 1. The new computer (i7, H77) uses the hard drive from the old system. The software on the hard drive, as connected to the new computer had to be "tweaked" kernel-wise only enough to make it work on the new hardware. 2. Both machines (same hard drive) are at 3.6.8 3. On the old machine the BLFS software is made up of: 1000 up-t-date packages 1000 missing packages (of which 500 are critical) 1000 out-of date packages (of which 500 are critical) BUT in spite of all that (and/or because of all that) The VERY SAME PRINTER with the VERY SAME USB CABLE WORKS and HAS WORKED FOR YEARS. 4. Other than what I mentioned, slight changes in kernel CONFIG on the new machine (to make it boot at all) the software was EXACTLY the same as point 3 above, warts and all (udev-182, rules, dev devices, what have you). 5. I SUBSEQUENTLY upgraded CUPS/FILTERS to 1.6.1 (from 1.5.0) ONLY in hopes of troubleshooting more cleanly and easily BUT pretend you didn't hear that because it would just muddle your Analise's of my original problem. As I said, there may be subtle (or heavy) differences in architectures that might affect the USB ports (among other things); obviously, a change of a USB device or so in /dev/ or /sys/ is easy to take into account. 6. I mentioned someplace else, my wife installed sometimes (long ago) Win7 with all the trimmings flawlessly in about two hours, but again try to forget that because as we all know, Micro$oft just sucks the blood of all the honest people who rightfully think that software and intellectual property should be free for us all to use and enjoy (unlike anything else, come to think of it) and to just find it hanging on the trees for anybody to pick.
