But how do people do when they build > gnome or X, to rebuild everything when they update lfs? I can't believe > everyone on lfs rebuild all his system at each update. Rebuilding some > part, yes; but all the blfs system... You probbably know that it is verry difficult to determine in advance what will survive. The difference between 7.2 and 7.3 for instance does not contain what sort of gcc and glibc is involved. I personnaly know by trying to build a clfs this time that this changes can cause big problems. Moreover if there is a major change in kernel headers between two versions things that are compiled in one version may no longer be compatible. I suspect that what you are requesting is a versionning of lfs that reflects such problems of compatiblity. In my opinion it is absolutely inpossible to realise. Even prebuilt distros like red hat or debian do not allow such things. If a package designated for fedora xx is not compatible for fedora xy I think that red hat devloppers will simply answer that you should install the suitable package. It is maybe a little bit more flexible with debian but you must think about the time spentd by debian developpers to provide such features. I would like to say : you simply have to test and if you can give a good feedbak it will be a good thing !
