Hi-

  Well, I just patched the xf86-video-ati driver, which was their
  recommended workaround. It seems to work so far, so maybe that was
  the issue. (Upgrading xorg-server would have required upgrading a
  great many other parts of xorg too, which I didn't want to do.)
