Howdy,
I'm trying to get printing to work with my new systemd installation, but
can't get lpr or lp to work on one of the two printers. Both printers
work with my Windows 7 machine.
I've gone through everything I can find on the Cups home page, which was
quite helpful in getting to where I am now with this.
At this point, the Cups "Printers" tab correctly lists my two printers,
the "Jobs" tab lists the three print jobs I submitted to the one that's
not printing, I can print from the other printer, and I can ping both
printers using their IP addresses. So I know that things are working up
to a point.
I can also list what's on the print queues with lpq like this:
lpq -P <printer name>
This lists the same three pending print jobs as the Cups tab does.
The only thing apparently missing is output from the one printer.
Any ideas?
Alan
What kind of printer is it? Manufacturer's name and model number would
be greatly helpful. I see that you're connected via network... have you
tried using USB (if your printer has USB support) for that printer to
see if it will work? Also, since you're network attached, do you have
the correct driver for your printer, and are you using the correct port
for that driver? If you're not using the correct driver and/or port,
your printer will never wake up and accept data from your computer. I
can't be any more helpful to you without more information.
The Cups printer page I'm looking has this URL: localhost:631/printers/
The printer that works with lpr:
Cups lists the "Description" as: EPSON_EPSON_WorkForce_610
Cups lists the "Make and Model" as: Epson WorkForce 610 -
CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10
Clicking on the link under "Queue Name" indicates a working connection
The printer that hangs with lpr:
Cups lists the "Description" as: EPSON_Epson_Stylus_NX420
Cups lists the "Make and Model" as: Epson Stylus NX420 -
CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10
Clicking on the link under "Queue Name" indicates a working connection
I haven't tried using USB, since the printers are clearly seen on my
wireless network (Cable modem -> Apple wireless router -> Linksys
ethernet router -> {Linux and Win7 machines} ).
The drivers are supplied by Gutenprint, so they ought to be correct. One
definitely works. The other is not clear.

Based on what I see here, I'd try different ports to see if it's a port
issue. Unfortunately, I don't have an Epson printer, so I won't be
familiar with their drivers. My Brother MFC unit, which is also setup as
a network device, I set up using Gnome's printer setup applet. I type in
the static IP, and it populates a bunch of ports. I've found I have to
use PASSTHRU to get it to work. I'm not sure if that's helpful, but it's
the only thing at this point that I can think of.
Hi Mike,
I guess that would be helpful if I knew what to do with that
information, but I'm quite new at all this, and I have no idea how to do
what you're suggesting. Any help will be appreciated.
Alan
Have you gotten to the point in your install that you're using a desktop
environment? In Gnome, the printer setup is done through a GUI. If you
are setting it up via command line, I won't be able to help very much.
Yes, I've gotten XFCE and LXDE up and running just the past couple of
days. I've not used these before, so I don't know anything about
configuring them yet.
Alan
In Gnome, there's a system settings link you can click on, then there is
a printer configuration applet in the corresponding window. I haven't
tried either XFCE or LXDE before, but I would assume there is a system
settings or printer settings applet somewhere. I also read that you can
install GNOME components specifically for printer setup, then delete
them once the install on your printer is complete. Not sure I can help
you past that.
Ok, I'll look into that.
