It sounds like a kernel problem, from what you describe. Have you enabled User Level Driver Support, as described in the 'Libevdev' section on the Xorg Drivers page?

Device Drivers  --->
  Input device support --->
    Event interface: Y or M
    Miscellaneous devices  --->
      User level driver support: Y or M

(and rebuilt the Linux kernel)?
