I think a lot of packages have a configure that checks for just about everything simply because the developers never put forth the effort to trim down to what tests they actually need. (At least this is what I suspect, I'm not certain of it.) Anyway, IIRC, enabling objective-C, java, and/or Go support really increases the gcc build times quite a bit. So, that would be a major factor with slower machines.
