To build a 64-bit system from a 32-bit system, you have to use CLFS techniques. It's far easier just to install something like 64-bit Debian 8.1 temporarily and build LFS from that. From then on, you can use your LFS system to build a more current LFS system.

BTW, I've been using a "Pure64" LFS system since 2009 with no problems at all.
