Looks like was added May 5th 2013:

That may help narrow it down to reason for change - via lists/web-search/&c.


_Seems_ to be no reason/discussion on b/lfs lists.


Maybe to do with changes in glibc/gcc practices incl standards-compliance
levels - e.g. (via quick web-search on _XOPEN_SOURCE 600 &c ):
