Edgar, so you've got a real puzzle on your hands. Clearly there's something different between your left-hand system and right-hand system. ;-) One line of attack would be to very carefully and in exquisite detail find out what IS different between them, from H/W & BIOS on up.
I think a profitable second would be to see if any errors are being reported to the console. For that I'd change /etc/inittab default to 3, then startkde (or whatever they call it these days) with stdout & stderr redirected to files for postmortem examination. (When starting X from the console like that, which I always do, you may not have everything visible on-screen when it terminates.) That should, but might not be so easy.
