You mention /dev, /run, and /proc - but not /bin, /etc, or /lib. And what those things all have in common is that they're mount-points for other filesystems. So, it sounds to me like XFCE is just being dumb... trying to list external devices like USB sticks, and screwing up by listing all mounted filesystems other than /. Simon.
