Let me point out that IM is an optional dependency of emacs. If you don't know why you need it, then don't use it when building emacs.
It's been many years since I used emacs regularly. I originally started using it because of the deficiencies in vi (not vim). Without a formal comparison, my impression is the the capabilities of emacs and vim have converged. The main differences are the set of keystrokes you are used to using to accomplish a specific task.
