I think what Pierre mean was that it doesn't include any other
headers. It contains many definitions, but it doesn't pull in any
other files.

Backups are always worthwhile. Having a means of restoring them is
equally important (e.g. boot another system on the same machine, or
else a rescue CD or usb which you know works on *this* machine,
particularly for newish hardware).
But I would not try recompiling until the cause of the problem can
be guessed at.
