Got the same question and the solution I took was to select MATE,
a gnome fork (http://pub.mate-desktop.org/releases), was easy
to integrate with BLFS described components.

MATE is gnome2 fork (which IMHO) give you a lot better
flexibility to customize your desktop than gnome3.
