Don't run as root?
Alternatively remove /root/.thunderbird/ or create a new user and try
running as that user.

I ran as user lfs, but got a message I've seen when testing several
programs:

Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Error: cannot open display: :0

Then I removed /root/.thunderbird and ran Thunderbird as root. Same
error message as before, except that when the program started up, it
wanted me to configure it as a new user. So something changed.
