When I start up my just-built Thunderbird I get this message:

(thunderbird:2253): libnotify-WARNING **: 14:10:04.156: Failed to connect to proxy

What should I do?

Don't run as root?

Alternatively remove  /root/.thunderbird/ or create a new user and try running as that user.

I ran as user lfs, but got a message I've seen when testing several programs:

#########

Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

Error: cannot open display: :0

#########

Then I removed /root/.thunderbird and ran Thunderbird as root. Same error message as before, except that when the program started up, it wanted me to configure it as a new user. So something changed.

Hi Alan,

Are you trying to run these programs in chroot? If you are, try running them on your LFS system when booted.

Hi Doug,

I'm running in my systemd LFS system. In fact, I've built all the dependencies for Firefox and Thunderbird in that system. I'm replying to this email in the new Thunderbird.

Also, are you running X as root (e.g. startx while root?) - if so, please run it as a normal user, as it's not recommended (primarily for security reasons) that you start/run X as root.

Yes, that's what I've been doing, not having known any better.

Now I've started up as myself rather than root. Now I get a similar but longer error message:

#########

alan [ ~ ]$ thunderbird

Now that I've configured Thunderbird for user alan, upon startup I get only the first three lines from the above:

##########

alan [ ~ ]$ thunderbird

This is using startx in the Linux console as user alan. X starts with the twm window manager, which so far as I can see, has very limited usefulness compared to others.

The only problem left, aside from the error message, is that hitting the ALT key fails to pop up the top toolbar that normally contains "File Edit View . . ."  This is a problem because I see no way to quit Thunderbird aside from Control-C or killing the job in Linux.

However, in Firefox hitting the ALT key does bring up the normal top toolbar.
