Sorry I'm only answering this a bit late, but when you 'start up' the computer, do you hear any fans etc. inside it making any noises?
Also, if you can see, then you can also check if, for example, the numlock indicator light on the keyboard comes on/off when you try pushing that key. That's almost the simplest way to see if the computer is actually 'on' at all.
