You did say that this was an external drive, right?

If that is the case, you can't do a scan disk on just the folder, you'll 
have to perform a scan disk on the entire drive the folder is on.

Since this is an external drive, you won't have to worry about having to do 
it when you next boot up, you can just do it without that pretence.

So, go into my computer, highlight the external drive where the corrupted 
folder is, then press the applications key and arrow up to properties.

You'll then be able to find the utilities tab in that properties dialog box.
