To add to the mystery, all I was trying to do was create a folder in my 
wife's name.  As David mentioned, all of the files in that My Documents 
folder were apparently highlighted at the same time.  Jaws didn't warn me 
and I ended up renaming almost 50 files and folders with Linda's name. 
Thanks to David and Patty, we figured out what had happend and I had to go 
back and rename every single file and folder.  What a mess!  The hints about 
quickly accessing the rename function using F2  was very helpful.  Here's an 
interesting bit of computer strangeness.  Each folder had Linda's name but 
they were numbered sequencially.  So, I got Linda1 through Linda48.
