Today at work I will find out the model of scanner I am using on my desk
with OpenBook, as well as the duplex scanner.

In the mean time, if you think you are going to have to do your scanning
with the binding on your books, you might want to start getting someone to
use sticky notes to mark the start and end of each chapter. This way you
can scan only when you need, and not the entire text. However, I think a
sheetfeeder is the best way to go. You must have a copy center on the
campus. They usually have the large cutting devices that would be capable
of cutting off the binding. Or are you enrolled in a course that does not
require you to step foot on a campus?

Hi Annette.

It's very kind of you to respond to my queries, so thank you. Do you know
of a scanner that's flat-bed, not necessarily duplex? I've tried to go
through the FS site's list of supported scanners, but it's too hard to tell
which scanners are out of date and not made anymore and which ones are too
expensive. I didn't find the price of the DR-5020 anywhere on the cannon
web site or on other sites. I definitely prefer to try to find out the
experiences of users with the latest scanners, not because I just have to
have a brand new scanner, but because the more recent scanners are easier to
find.

Unfortunately, Disability services in my state take far too long to buy
equipment for the blind, and I'm already in school. I'm enrolled in a
distance learning medical transcription program through Penn Foster
University. By the time the state would get through the required red tape,
I would be done with my courses. I live in a rural area where the nearest
kinko's is about fifty miles away, so scanning the books myself is
definitely the best way to go about this. I really appreciate that you
responded because It brought abby fine reader to my attention. Thanks
again.

Hi Tony,

The employee who requested Abby Fine Reader and this scanner says that Abby
Fine does a better job then OpenBook, but I have not used it personally, and
since the printer just arrived today, I'm yet to see it work.

I can tell you now that high speed scanning adds additional factors that can
cause a poor scan. Once you have the binding cut off of your books, you
have to be sure you remove all of the remaining glue from the pages of the
book. If this is left on, it will gunk up your scanner resulting in
jamming, or smudges on the lens which will effect the quality of the final
product. Pages can sometimes stick together due to high humidity levels, or
excessive static when the humidity is low. Sometimes the pages stick
together just because they want to.

I forgot to tell you that the scanner that I'm going to give you the info on
tomorrow, costs around $1200 to $1500.

Have you talked to the Office of Disability Services to have them cover the
cost of you having your books scanned?

Didn't I already provide you with a link to a company who scans textbooks
for a fee?

Where are you going to school? Many colleges and universities are now
joining together to scan books for their students.

Annette

Hi Annette.

Thank you for this information. I look forward to hearing about this
scanner. I had an epson and can't remember the model number. I used it
with Windows 2000 years ago, and it worked ok, but it slowed down
unacceptably when I switched to XP. It is surprisingly difficult to find a
fast scanner that doesn't also cost way too much.

I found a blog on the web about ABBYY and wondered if it would serve me just
as well as open book. Do you know if it's any faster or slower, or whether
the OCR is comparable to the ones included in open book?

Hi Tony,

I believe the Cannon 5020 is a high speed duplex scanner that I was using in
my previous job. It is no longer made and has been replaced with the 5070
or 5080. These are very fast scanners with very high price tags. If my
memory serves me correctly, they run around $4000 to $5000. These are not
bed scanners, thus you will need to have the binding cut off of your text
books before you can scan them. Usually your campus copy center, or local
Kinko's can do this for you. Some Kinko's have been known to cut the
binding off of the book(s) as long as you agree to return to them to have a
new comb or spiral binding put on the book by them once you are done
scanning the book.

There is another scanner you might want to take a look at. I will need to
provide you with the model number tomorrow. We just purchased this scanner
for an employee at my current job. I do not know if this scanner will work
with OpenBook, but the user will be using it with Abby Fine Reader and JAWS
to scan large quantities of hardcopy material. The scanner is a flat bed
scanner with a sheet feeder that is capable of performing duplex scanning,
at a rate of 25 single-sided pages per minute, or 50 pages per minute when
the pages are double-sided because it is scanning both sides at the same
time.

HTH
Annette

Hello everyone.

I need a fast scanner that will allow me to scan my text books with Open
Book from FS. I'm very busy, and time is of the essence. Can those of you
with experience in this share which scanners you have used or would
recommend for speed and accuracy? I need something big enough to scan text
books the size of an anatomy and physiology text. I looked on the FS site,
and the fastest one I found was the cannon DR50-20, but there was no
information on the cannon site about it. Thanks for any info.
