I have used laptops for the past 18 years. I used Toshiba exclusively up until 18 months ago. Now I am a true believer in Del. There are many very knowledgeable people on this list who will be able to direct you to what to look out for and what to include. My experience has been be aware of video cards. Get as much RAM and hard disk space as you can afford. Buy the lightest laptop you can afford. Six pounds is not all that heavy until you are racing down the street to catch your bus.
I used to believe that you should go for the top of the line so that you could count on it for a very long time and not have to worry about getting JAWS to work on a new computer any sooner then necessary, but I've revised that line of thinking. In the past 5 years, I've seen very few laptops last more then 2 years. Good luck!
