Ok.

What software are you actually using to try and produce these files, and 
have you actually tried playing them on another machine?

I don't really know much about this stuff - sorry.

The only .mid files I have on my machine are some things that I think are 
meant to be used as ringtones on ooooold mobile phones, so I don't really 
understand what you're asking with regard to assigning voices etc.

My brother is an actual musician/sound producer/technician, so he might know 
about these things, but unfortunately the closest I come to music is playing 
drums occasionally.
