Not a problem Jacob. The difficulty was in my software as you suspected. I
am using Real Player, Version 10.5. I called the support center and they
helped me straighten things out. Now, it plays MIDI files without trouble.
As for assigning voices, MIDI has 16 channels which operate simultaneously.
It is possible to assign a separate instrument to each of those channels so
that information can be sent directly to that voice. For example, the bass
is playing one track, while the drums are doing something else. In the old
days, when you set up a MIDI program, you had to manually assign each voice
to a particular channel. There were default choices like the Channel 10 for
the drums but for the most part, you could have just about any instrument in
the list of choices playing different parts. The result, if handled well,
sounded like a full orchestra.
But Jacob, there's MIDI and there's MIDI. Some of it sounds like one of
those electronic music boxes. Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right
direction.
