As you move through the folders, it does announce them, "Folder A", Folder B",..."Music Folder", "Audible Folder".
Your recorded messages do not have file names that you navigate through. When you are looking for a message that you previously recorded, you press play and start listening to the message and if it is not the one you are looking for, then you press the forward button and skip to the next message. You can stop listening to a message and then continue when you are ready. You might want to join the NFB electronics Talk list.
