-- I would like to do my address labels using open book to make sure if all the address are on the label correctly. I know their are labeling programs which one can use to label with. How do you know if the program starts at the top left of the page and does it label all the labels from left to right on the top line of labels or does it go down the page and up the page on the other side. If only a few labels are needed for that time can you only use say a partial page and then insert the page later in the printer and a fresh label is searched for? In fact my canon DR2580 has no flatbed capacity at all as this comes with an add-on costing over £300 and this I cannot see the justification for this. . I use an old canon flatbed I bought for £30 to do things like your scanning of a package and it does fine for this sort of thing. So I have ended up with 2 scanners, one high quality one for scanning books and multiple page documents and one for things like your packaging. They are both pretty small so space is not an issue. Modern scanners are much smaller than older models. Annette is however absolutely right. It depends how important reading books and large documents are for you. I paid £550, that is over $1,000 for my scanner a duplex Canon DR2580 and it has been worth, believe me, every penny. In the past week alone I have scanned 1,400 pages of law books that I need to read and reference for my course. Over the last year I have scanned thousands of pages of other books. The way I work is to buy the book and then tear out the pages to put through my document scanner. Some people find tearing out pages of sometimes new books upsetting but they are useless to me in print. Where ever I can I buy second hand books. Using this method I require no sighted help and can scan say a 300 page book in less than 30 minutes. Believe me a slow non duplex or flatbed scanner is simply not up to this and paying money for such kit is a waste of money if you need to do serious amounts of reading. A lesser scanner is fine for the occasional letter or small document if that is all you need or want to do. Reading books however is a different ball game. I am determined to access books as much as any sighted person and using a decent scanner removes the necessity to employ or find sighted assistance. Finally I'll mention again that the best OCR I have ever used is the Microsoft Office Document Scanning.
