Subject: [Blind-Computing] MySpace accessibility, was RE: Stopping music on
MySpace pages

Hi victor. Thanks, and I tried that but MySpace still automatically played
the music. However, I had a sighted friend help me set up my account, and
he found an option to disable the automatic playing of music on MySpace
pages. So, all in all, the problem is solved... at least as far as MySpace
is concerned.

But this brings up another point. The MySpace community is not accessible
in many ways. For one thing, I couldn't sign up on my own. Yup, they have
one of those graphics you have to see and then type in. Unlike some sites
out there, they don't offer an alternative, such as to listen to a sound
clip and type in what you hear.

And I've been informed that when contacting other MySpace members, they
often configure their page to utilize more of those graphics to contact
them, so they can avoid spam. This means without sighted assistance, I
can't even contact other MySpace members.

MySpace apparently has become a bigger deal than I first realized. In my
line of work, it's becoming a necessity that I have a page. But it looks
like my accessibility is going to be hampered.

Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Any thoughts on how to approach
MySpace about the use of their graphics?

Hi Chris,

In the Internet Options, under the advanced tab, down in the multimedia
groups, you'll see play sounds in web pages checked.

Just uncheck it and you won't get any sounds coming through IE any longer.

You can always turn this back on when you finish with the page, but that's
entirely up to you.

As Sarah suggested, if it's coming through a flash player, then it gets a
bit more involved, as you'll have to get IE to ignore flash content, and
that may ruin a great number of web pages that you may visit frequently
without any problems. Again, that's entirely up to you, but if you need the
instructions, let me know and I'll walk you through the managing add-ons in
IE.

Victor
