Samuel, It sounds like you are having issues with your hard disk. If it popped up asking for a boot disk, you are very close I fear to a severe crash. If you can get your data off in some fashion, you might want to do that immediately and reformat.
One option to try is opening the case and place a fan to blow cool air into the case. A termperature or failing fan could cause such issues you describe. If this is a laptop, try sitting the laptop on a grate or such to place a fan below the laptop. If the above doesn't work... There is one solution that I've been using now regularly to recover friend's computers, and that is Spinrite from http://grc.com, created by Steve Gibson. Spinrite will intensely check your drive for errors and remove them from the boot record, allowing the computer to continue running. Spinrite will require a CD-ROM or floppy drive to run and it does require sight to access at boot up. A level 4 scan will take a while to run. A 250gb hard drive may take 36 hours to complete. Oh, Spinrite is $89 per copy, but it can be found in the "underworld" occassionally. Spinrite is a great option for keeping drives alive.
