This is a different David here but I thought I would have a go at answering
your question.

An "image" copies all of your hard disc including registry settings windows
system files, even temporary files. When you restore an image you delete
all of the current contents of your drive and replace it with the restored
image. It effectively takes your computer back in time to a previous state.
Typically a restore takes you out of Windows and the next time you boot it
will be your previous image that loads. However any data files that you have
created since the image will be lost.

I think an image should be taken as soon as possible after getting a new PC
when you are happy with it. You can then always go back to this state.

So I think the best advice is to have 2 sorts of backup.
1. An image system backup. You should do this as soon as you have a stable
system with all the software you need installed. Norton Ghost, Image for
Windows should do this for you.
2. A data backup done at least weekly. This should include all your
documents, media files and emails etc. Also any new programs you have
bought. Karen's Replicator is great for this.

So you have 2 sorts of security. If you need to recall an accidentally
deleted or corrupted file - just use your data backup that Karen's
replicator has done for you.

If you have more serious problems with your system you can restore from an
old image and you can still have your data files to add back in. You may
then have to run various Windows updates to "catch up" but you will know
that you always have a stable system to turn to in case of any problems.

Regards

David Griffith

Hi David,
I am going to buy myself an external hard drive, as I want to copy the
information I have on my main hard drive, so I don't lose everything in the
event of a system crash. Can you please tell me, what is the difference
between using an imaging software like the one you speak of in your message,
and using a program like Karen's replicator which is on your site? I am a
bit confused, as to which would be best to go with.
thanks Jason
