Microsoft Document Scanning is a little hard to find. If you have Office
then you will find it on the start menu Programs list buried under Microsoft
Office and then under the Tools Menu. I normally copy the shortcut from
here to somewhere more convenient.

The program needs a little setting up. You will need to check that your
scanner is selected under the scanner button and you should tab through all
the options to check that they are set as you want them. The good news is
that the program is 100% completely accessible so you will not have any
problems tabbing to all the options. You have the option of using the
inbuilt Microsoft scanner driver interface or using the scanner interface
provided by your scanner
Personally I use the interface provided by my scanner as it has more
features .

One tip, if you have a duplex scanner then let your scanner driver take care
of double sided scanning and do not tick this option in Microsoft Document
Scanning. Ticking this option in MDS will mean that you will be prompted to
turn pages over and scan pages twice. A duplex scanner will not need you to
do this.

Once you have options set up as you want them you simply select the scan
button. After scanning Microsoft Document Scanning will automatically load
the scan into the Microsoft Document Imaging program.

Under the Tools menu of Microsoft Document Imaging you select the "Send text
to Word" menu. You will then need to press enter to clear the dialogue box
asking you to confirm you want all pages sent.

Microsoft Word will then open with your scanned text. A slight oddity is
that this is in a web htm format. I normally save at RTF or Text file. Jaws
seems to read better in these file types.

It's a little clunky but the payoff is the high quality OCR performance. As
I say on my PC it easily outperforms programs like Kurzweil which whilst
having a superior interface simply do not provide the same level of OCR
recognition so I am happy to put up with the interface to get this result.

David Griffith

David, I'd like to know more about Document Scanning. Can you tell me about
it, how to get to it and what I need?
