David, I'm not an expert here, but my first router was wide open to the public -- anyone who got within range. I now have a newer Linksys router. For this one I have to enter a number on the remote computer in order to access the wireless network. Perhaps someone else knows more about this, but I don't think the IP address makes a difference.
