Tom, You can try doing a file repair with System File Checker (SFC) in XP. Here's a quick explanation.
1) Put in your Windows XP CD. 2) Start, Run... 3) Type> sfc /scannow 4) Hit enter and SFC will check for damaged XP files, if it finds any it will restore the system file. If using JAWS or other speech software, you may not get a voice response. Figure on this taking about 20 minutes and it will not tell you if you fixed anything. Hokie to not provide a status, but it can fix some things. If that does not work, you will most likely need to try a system restore of XP or maybe even a complete reinstall of XP.
