It maybe because there's nothing broadcasting a wireless signal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 2 wire gateway is a cable modem, so you'd need to buy a wireless router, which will in turn connect to the gateway, then there will be something for the wireless adapter in your machine to receive a signal from, thus getting you onto the net.
