Hi there Patricia. To put it simply, if you choose the low memory option, AVG will scan without using up a great deal of your "head room" or available RAM. The process takes more than twice as long but it is just as effective. The only time that might be something to consider would be if you were working on the computer while AVG was running in the background. The second option will take as much RAM as it needs and tends to make your system act a bit weird while it's running. At the second choice, you have about an hour for the average unit in which you can still use other programs but they will respond more slowly than they would without AVG involvement. That's a very sophisticated option and I've never seen it anywhere except on AVG.
Now to answer your other questions, every time you turn on your computer with AVG loaded, it does a quick scan which does slow down the loading process. But it is a very safe procedure and I think it's well worth a minute or so in waiting time. As for when to scan, most anti-virus designers recommend that you scan at least once a week. AVG offers you several levels of scan as well. You can do a quick scan or a full scan which runs your entire system for possible problems. If I had to choose, I'd select AVG full scan and do it once a week. Finally, the Norton anti-virus systems were comparable to AVG in their type of scanning and so if you choose to scan weekly, then you would be getting about the same level of processing that the older Norton software gave you. As Rick would say, HTH.
