That same sound and audio device settings dialogue I mentioned in the other thread has an option on the volume page to show that icon in the system tray.
Start menu|settings|control panel|sounds and audio devices, then on the starting page, tab until you find it and make sure it's checked, then tab to Ok, and hit space.
