Bill, you might as well ask which is preferable, Chevy or Ford? It depends
on who you're talking to. I have challenged Chris on his rabid attitudes
about AVG before and I'll probably do it again. But he does have a point.
However, for the record, I use AVG and it has never read Gold Wave as a
virus. Everyone has their preference. If I read your message correctly,
you want something that will protect your system without jumping through too
many hoops. For me, AVG does that quite well. For Chris, being English
and all, (wicked grin), for him Avast does the job and if you ask him,
he'll tell you ad nausium. If we had an unofficial count, I'd bet you find
that about 70% of the blind computer users employ AVG. That was true until
the recent problem with Jaws. Some are still experiencing difficulty with
AVG Version 8. Freedom Scientific has tried to implement a fix with their
latest Jaws update. For me, it worked and I have never regretted using AVG.
However, that is certainly no reflection on the quality of Avast. Both will
slow down your computer when they're working. Both are quite effective in
updating their virus definitions automatically although I have heard that
Avast, in some machines, requires that the update be done manually. I think
that pound for pound, you won't go wrong with either system, Bill. But
Avast does require a few settings and adjustments to make it work easily
with Jaws. Again, Chris Hallsworth can provide you with a step by step
explanation of how to adjust your system to get the best out of Avast.

Personally, I prefer Ford over Chevy. Finally, Chris has his reasons for
doing most things. His dislike of AVG is, I believe, based on personal and
unhappy experience. Right now, I am trying a completely different type of
anti-virus program. I downloaded a trial version of Windows Live One Care.
I have retained my AVG and will, in the near future, reactivate it. But for
the time being, Live One Care seems to be doing an effective job of scanning
my system and removing threats. Who knows, Bill?
