Might be a 'corrupted' file as such, but I just tried importing an mpeg file into audacity, then exported the .wav version, which I then converted into MP3 using switch, and while the whole process went relatively smoothly, the sound quality wasn't perfect, but it worked as such.
What I've also done in the past when I had no other way of converting a file as such, but could play it, I in fact sort of positioned my microphone in front of the speakers and used Audacity to record the output, and that came out alright since I have a relatively directional microphone, and, although I haven't done too much thereof, audacity does have some effects you can apply to the track including noise suppression (not sure if that's the right terminology, but anyway). Have also thought about using a similar process to record my own tutorials as well, but haven't gotten around to that one yet - LOL!
