Ginger, I do the same thing that Rick does. I have three external hard drive and they are always connected to the computer , but the power is off on all three. I only turn any of them on when I am either saving or retrieving data.
I think that if you leave the power on all the time, the hard drive gets warm and if your environment is warm to begin with, this may shorten the life of the hard drive.
