It sounds like you need to make changes to the column settings. Give this a try.
Select the entire document. From the Format pull down menu on the menu bar arrow down to Columns...and press enter to select it. A dialog box will open. Use your tab key to move around. There is an edit box that wants to know how many columns you want change this to 1. Tab away from this box and then Shift Tab back to it to make sure it still says 1. Change it again if necessary. Because your document has a variety of formatting, this can cause your first selection to not remain. Now tab to OK and check out your document.
