Yes, but before you try MediaPlayer, put the DVD in the drive, open My Computer and go to the drive letter for your DVD drive and see if anything is there. Try opening the drive to make sure your computer can read what is in the drive. By the way, does the drive seem to handle CD's OK?

If you see a couple of files on the disk then it's probably safe to assume that you have a good disk, that the drive is really a DVD drive, and that it is working. Now press Alt-left-arrow to close the drive. Press the Applications key (that's the third key to the right of the space bar) and arrow down to the 'Open With' option and press Enter. Select Windows MediaPlayer from the list box and press Enter and see what happens.

That's about as far as I can take you for the moment, so let me know how it goes.

Take care,
Russ

Hello Russ.
First of all, thanks for your response. Here's what happened.
Absolutely nothing. When I put the disk in, the drive moved a couple of
times but I received no message at all.
It behaved as if there was no disk in there at all.

Should I activate Windows Media Player, then try the disk?
I'm a bit lost, here.

I guess really the first question to ask is whether a pop-up message
appeared when you put the disk in the drive. Were you given the option to
use MediaPlayer to play the DVD?If it did, and you chose MediaPlayer, what happened next? If you tried to play the DVD using Windows MediaPlayer, did
you get a message saying that you do not have a video codex installed?
Usually, a video codex is included with a DVD drive so you might check to
see if a CD was included with your drive.

Let us know what you tried and what happened.

Take care,
Russ

Subject: [Blind-Computing] QUESTION ABOUT PLAYING DVDS ON A COMPUTER

I tried to play a DVD on my computer recently, something I've never tried
before. Needless to say, it didn't work at all.
Here are a couple of questions that I hope someone can answer for me.

1. The drive I have is marked as a CD/DVD drive. But does it have
to
operate at a certain speed to play DVD disks?
Do they operate at a higher speed than 32X?

2. Do I need some kind of special program to play DVD disks on my
computer
if the drive is fast enough?
3. I have GoldWave, Real Player and Windows Media Player. Is it correct
to
assume that none of these will play a DVD recording?
