I have version 0.8.6 of VLC Media Player. VLC has a customizable interface. In
the version I have the default interface is very useable. However, the
preferences dialog is hard to use. Sometimes using the JAWS cursor can be
used to determine the function of the key. This is a long scrolling list.
Each key assignment is a row with the function of the key on the far left
followed by 3 checkboxes to determine if the Alt, Control and/or Shift modifier
keys will be part of the keystroke, and finally a combo box of the key to be
assigned. JAWS has difficulty with this since the label is so far from the
combo box. The list does not seem to scroll as JAWS tabs through the dialog.
This makes it impossible to use the JAWS cursor to understand where you are in
the list, since the item with focus is not visible on the screen. I do not
know how to force JAWS / VLC to make the PC cursor visible by scrolling the
list. Does anyone know a trick to force the application to update the screen
and scroll to always make the focused item visible?

The main keys I use are:

Play /pause = Space bar
Full Screen = f
Stop = s
Next = n
Previous =p
There a variety of forward and backward hotkeys using the left and right arrow
keys with modifier keys
Quit = Control +q
Mute = m
Volume Up = Control + up arrow
Volume Down =Control + down arrow
(The up and down volume controls do not work for me on Vista, even if I
reassign them!)

As I was writing this I found a reliable way to get the function name (purpose)
of each key assignment. As you tab through the dialog and get to a combo box
for the key assignment where JAWS does not say its function, do the following:

1. Press the JAWS key + Spacebar to enter the Home Row Utilities.

2. Press Shift + Tab 4 times. This will place you on the static text that
contains the function name. If it did not say the function or you want to have
it repeat, press F1 to repeat the name.

3. Press the JAWS key + Spacebar combination again to turn off the Home Row
Utility. You will be returned back to the combo box.

Perform these steps each time your on a key assignment that JAWS can not
properly say the function of the key assignment.

Here are some more hotkeys I found with this method: (even more are available,
mostly DVD related, if you check "Advanced options")
slower = -
faster =+
(if you change the playback speed, the sound is turned off)
Cycle audio track = l
Cycle subtitle track = k
Cycle source aspect ratio =a
Cycle video crop =c
Cycle interface mode = d

If anyone needs an older version, I have a copy of 0.7.1 that I can send you as
an enclosure off list.
