Which SSH client are you using? We're using putty as a telnet client to log
into the routers for our cisco class, but it won't work with NVDA at all.
We're only using NVDA because those machines are used for lab purposes and
so get altered both hardware and software wise quite frequently, so
installing jaws wouldn't be practical.

Wow, I was not aware that rdp could be used with jaws or wineyes, how easy
is it to get going? I have tried installing the free version of vnc I
think it is and it didn't work at all. Having an accessible way to
remotely log into another computer would be great if trying to help
someone with an issue and ssh is the only real way I have ever found. Any
links or info on this would be wonderful.
