I once quickly tested GoToMyPC.com for this purpose. Since both of my legs
are amputated, I would like a way to perform maintenance on my kids two
computers. It is nearly impossible or me to get to these machines
physically. very amazing product. Actually it is more of a service. It
requires you to log in to their server which manages the connection. This
can be fairly transparent and can even have a simple shortcut on the desktop
for quick connection to the remote computer. There is a monthly charge for
this service. It is not completely JAWS friendly. I found it to worked
great except I could not get it to pass some modifier keys like Control and
possibly the Alt (can't remember about this key for certain) keys through to
the remote computer. It did pass other keys like the windows and Insert
keys through. I was able to connect to our old XP desktop, start up NVDA,
and run certain programs. I would hear the JAWS voice for my local computer
and the NVDA voice for the remote computer. This was painful to rethink
every task to get around the Control key! Rather than pay the monthly fee,
I decided to bribe my daughter to do these tasks instead! The good news is
that I am training a future IT professional.
I believe Freedom Scientific uses this Citrix technology in their new Tandem
feature. Of course, for this feature, JAWS 10 must be running on both
computers and there must be a person to actively accept the connection on
the remote computer. A very cool feature, but not exactly what I need in
this case.
I used to use VNC (Virtual Network Computer) for this purpose. It is a free
public license program to remotely control other computers. It does not
utilize a Internet server and can keep all traffic local. In my case, no
traffic would leave the house. I am not sure whether this software works
across the Internet to control a work computer from home. It is strictly
graphical and completely unusable with JAWS. It would need to be accessed
strictly with the mouse. I stopped using this as my vision got worse.
Perhaps in a pinch, I could use this slowly with a magnifier?

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that the consensus is that Jaws must
be running on both computers. In this case, that will be a problem, as
the computers that will be supported have no reason to be running Jaws.
It would be nice if there was a way to just run the FS video intercept and
route that data to the Jaws computer doing the support. If we could get
FS and one of the remote support providers to link up and work this out,
they would definitely fill a niche market.

John,
I use Microsoft Remote Access along with Jaws 10.0.512U on my home
computer running Windows XP Home Edition to control my work computer. My
work computer also has Jaws 10.0.512U, but it runs with Windows
Professional. Using Jaws, you cannot control a remote computer unless
Jaws is also running on that computer. Furthermore, the home computer
must be running Jaws Professional, and on top of that, it must have the
remote access option enabled. This will add about $400.00 to the license
fee for Jaws on the home computer.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Remote Control Software with Screen Readers
Hi everyone:
Does anyone have experience using any remote control software with Jaws?
The scenario would be: a person using Jaws on the remote side would
control a host computer which does not have any screen reader installed.
The remote side (with Jaws) would be running XP. The host side (without
Jaws) could be XP, Vista or 2000.
I know it's a long shot, but thought I would throw it out there.
Thanks,
John
