Hello
I have copied below the same instructions I posted a couple of days ago.

What version of Windows are you using?
I can give you step by step instructions for re-installing your USB
drivers
on your machine for XP. I have actually copied this below from my web
site.
I had Vista taken off my machine so someone with Vista would have to
check
if the same steps would work with Vista.
To do this
Unplug all your USB devices with the exception of your keyboard and mouse
if
you use one.
Go to Control Panel and then open the System applet.
Pres control tab until you hear hardware.
Press tab until you hear Device Manager. Press space to open this.
Press tab once to go into a tree view of devices.
You need to cursor down until you hear Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Press the right cursor key to open this view.
You now need to find the core USB driver for your PC. This may be named
after your processor. On my PC this driver is called
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host
Highlight this line and press the delete key.
Confirm that you want to delete the driver. Windows will immediately start
to re-install it.
After a few seconds Windows will recognise your keyboard and mouse.
Exit device manager and restart your windows.
After windows have completely reloaded start to plug in your USB devices
one
by one. As you would have cleared the windows database of devices there is
a
chance that any problems will now disappear as windows re-constructs it
USB
device database.
If this does not work and your hardware is not faulty then I am afraid a
system restore or windows re-install is indicated.

So far, no known power or hardware issue. Works on another computer, and I
need to find a USB device to plug in to this one to try that option. Hard
drive has its own power supply, so don't need to power it from the
computer.
Thanks,
Nance

We need a little more information.
Does the external drive have a power supply?
Is there any sign that you can tell that power is going through to the
unit?
Are you able to see the power light come on? If not is there any
activity
that you can feel if the unit is powered on?
If there is a power supply is this emitting heat or cold?
If the drive is powered from the USB Port is there an optional connection
to
increase power to the drive?
Have you installed any other devices since yesterday?
Have you tried plugging the drive into another USB Port?
Have you tried plugging another device into this Port to check it works -
a
USB Pen drive for example.
Do you have access to a friend's computer to check to see if the drive
works
on another machine?
If it is not a hardware or power issue There are steps for you to take
to
re-install your USB drivers which I can post. However this will
obviously
not work if there is a power or hardware failure issue so information on
this is the best initial step.

I have an external hard drive with music on it. I accessed it yesterday
from
this computer, but no matter what I do, it will not recognize it today.
How
do I get the computer to recognize it? It's a USB device.
TIA,

Good suggestions, John, and I have tried the cord in another USB port, as
well as connecting my device to another computer, on which it works. This
tells me I probably have some kind of USB issue, so I'm going to do one
more thing, which is to connect another USB device to the computer and
see
if it works, then probably figure out what to do next. Perhaps uninstall
and reinstall USB drivers?

Hi Nancy,
Have you tried a different usb port on the off chance that it's the port
and
not the device that's giving you trouble?
Also, if you can disconnect the cord at the other end, try another usb
cord
and see what happens.
Jon

I've tried rebooting, I've taken the unit off the computer and rebooted,
then rebooted again with it connected, I've done everything! I don't get
it!
Thanks for trying,
Nance
