I was highly disappointed to find that a resource I depended on is no longer usable! I have used speed test at least monthly to check the bandwidth Verizon was providing. The page at: speakeasy.net/speedtest was in Flash, but the several buttons for various cities were well labeled and accessible with JAWS. The pretty speedometer and results within the Flash movie were almost worthless to me without magnification. However, the previous version also had the results repeated below the Flash object frame in plain text. This was very accessible and I could copy the results text to my calendar to compare results over time. Unfortunately, the new version of this test did away with both the accessible buttons to start the test and the accessible results!
I have also used Verizon's speed test at:
http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/hsi/

It is not as easy as speakeasy was. It requires you to activate the "Check My Speed >" link, then activate the "Continue >" on their disclaimer page to finally get at the results page. Wait a minute or two before looking for the results.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Looking for Accessible Broadband Speed Test Site

Hi All.

I recently had some work done by my ISP, and they used www.speakeasy.net to test my connection speeds for downstream and upstream. I went to this site
on the repairman's advice and thought I'd check it out.

Unfortunately, the speed test is a flash-based system.I get a couple boxes
that say "Flash Movie Start" and "Flash Movie End", but none of the buttons
show so I can't launch the test, tell what the progress is, anything like
that. Now, as I'm sure has happened to many of you, I've noticed I can use
some Flash sites and not others.

I

'm running the latest update to JAWS 10, and the latest update to FireFox 3.
IE7 wouldn't even show the Flash, even though I DO NOT have JAWS set up to
ignore Flash.

So

, I'm looking for a site that has a somewhat screenreader-friendly speed
test I can run once in a while. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Wes

PS: The reason my Comcast guy used Speakeasy.net is because we're in
Everett, WA, and they're just down the road in Seattle, so the servers are
local.
