Also, why is it better to do a clean install, rather than an upgrade?

If this is the case, is it reversible?  I think it was a clean install,
because my brother in-law did it and he is a I T, and very good at his work.

No, I'm not sure on that one. Cliff I think you did an upgrade rather than a

custom (clean) install.
