Hi Lois,
I'm using Word 2000
My mistake,the correct key combination is
control + alt + 1, or 2, or 3.
As far as I can tell, you can only create heading levels 1, 2 or 3 in this 
manner.
I'm not very well versed in Word, so someone who is more knowledgeable will 
have to add to this.
Sorry for the confusion.

  Select the text that you want as a heading,
  then press alt + 1, for heading level 1, alt + 2, for heading level 2 etc.
