If you're using DVDR disks then there shouldn't be any formatting involved 
at all. DVDRW disks do require such a procedure but for long term 
application storage they are not as stable.

Hi Mark,

What are you attempting to burn to the disk?  Do you want to burn a movie,
data, ISO images, or something else?  For all tasks except copying data, I
let the burning application do the erase, format, and burning?  Are you
using DVD-R or DVD-RW media?  What Operating System are you using?
