Also have either of these PCs got any version of MacAfee installed?
There is an issue with MacAfee preventing home networking which personally I
do not know how to resolve. All I know is that if I take MacAfee off and
replace it with something else like ESET Avast , or AVG,  computers
previously unable to network  connect fine.
I have had this experience on 3 machines now.

Hi Ken,

Are you sure that you enabled file and printer sharing on computer #1 and 
then shared at least one folder?  With Vista, you can also run into 
permission difficulties if you have different user names and passwords on 
the two computers.  I do not think XP has that type of security, but the Pro

version may have user security.
