Ok, the following are the instructions now got from FS support, and seems like they might have sorted the problems:
---instructions---
1. minimize all applications (windows key+m)
2. Unselect the item if it's checked (control+spacebar)
3. Activate the context menu (windows application key)
note: this is the key to the left of the right control key on standard
windows keyboards.
4. Press the letter r to activate the display properties
5. on the Themes Page:
set to windows xp.
To change press alt plus down arrow to open
note: Do not use XP modified
6. Control Tab to the Desktop Tab
Set background to bliss
Set position stretch
7. Press Control Tab to Screen Saver
Set to none]
8. Control Tab to Appearance Tab
Set to Windows xp
Color Scheme blue default
Font Size Normal
9. Control+tab to the settings tab,
color: 32 bit
resolution: 1024 by 768
10. Tab to okay and hit enter

Suggestions for setting up folders in Windows XP
1. Hold down the Windows key and press the letter M to get to the desktop.
2. Press M for my computer and press Enter.
3. Press Alt plus t and up arrow to Folder Options and press Enter.
4. When on the general tab, set tasks to use Windows Classic Folders.
Set to Open folders in the same Window.
5. Tab to OK and press Enter.

Performance settings:
1. Go to the control Panel
2. Press the letter s until you get to system and hit enter
3. Control+tab to the advanced page
4. If you are not on performance settings, tab to this control and hit
enter
5. You will be positioned on the visual effects page. The first control
will probably read:
let windows choose what's best for my computer
I need you to arrow down to:
Adjust for best performance
6. Tab once to the treeview
7. Use your arrow keys to go up and down the list and make sure all items
or off by pressing the spacebar. Note: in some cases, it is necessary to
press the spacebar twice to get this setting to go to off.
8. Tab to okay and hit enter
9. Tab to okay and hit enter again
---end of instructions---

Suppose it might have been specifically related to the performance relevant visual effects that are now all turned off since even the status bar thing in the outlook express send/receive dialogue seems to be working again, but will again just say that generally it's safer to activate a specific button with the space bar, and not the enter key since that can sometimes, if not necessarily every time, activate the dialogue's default button instead of the current one.

Stay well

Hi Jacob,

Are you sure that the windows are maximized? Just a thought. Take care.

Oh, yes and another symptom of whatever is that in the send receive dialogue of outlook express, if I read it's status bar, it just says 12 to me instead of telling me how many tasks have been successful etc., but if I switch over to jaws cursor and move down there, the info is there, but not being 'seen'
by jaws or something.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Display settings on a newly reloaded XP
machinerunning jaws 11.0.746

Just reloaded my home machine, and it's running jaws 11.0.746, but
something that didn't have before is now here.

Although made sure loaded display drivers etc. before installing jaws, and
the only real difference is only loaded jaws 11 on it this time, is that
when I switch between open windows using alt + tab, it seems to read the
window titles as if they were overlapping or something, even if one of the
windows has since been closed.

If I do reread the title of a window using jaws key + T thereafter though
it seems fine, and same if I switch to jaws cursor and go have a 'look',
but this is a bit irritating some of the time when trying to decide which
one of several open windows I want to end up on, and although emailed FS
support a day or two ago, no answer, so just wondered if anyone has any
ideas relating to what screen resolution I should specifically target
since have already made sure it's set to 1024x768 which is what am sure
was on before, and see in colour levels I can only choose from either
16bit or 32bit options, but don't think that would have made all that much
difference since it's highly unlikely any machine nowadays is set to
something like 256 colours etc.

Anyway, any ideas on what setting I should try making a change to, or
should I try something like a jaws repair - 4 days after doing the
complete reload?

Stay well
