I think that Microsoft document Imaging comes with all versions of office
but I understand that it is not always installed by default.
If it is not installed on your system you need to run your Office Setup
program again and make sure that all the Office Tools features are selected
for installation. I don't think you have to re-install all your
applications, just select the Office tools bit.

Once installed you should find a folder in your start programs Microsoft
Office and then Tools where there are some very useful programs.

You should also find a virtual printer installed on your system called
Microsoft Document Writer.

This is the printer you print to. It will create a file with a tif
extension. As I say Microsoft document Imaging should load this file
automatically and from there you can run OCR and then send text to word.
I have done this many times with PDF documents and personally I believe the
results are better than Kurzweil though admittedly using Kurzweil is
smoother with automatic OCR.

Use the Microsoft Office Document Image Printer.
Print the PDF to this virtual Printer and the resulting
tiff file should
open in Microsoft document Imaging.
Go the tools menu and perform OCR.
Then go the tools menu again and select send text to word.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Converting Password Protected PDF
Textbooks

Hi
My college is trying to convert all their online
classes to PDF
textbooks that can be down loaded directly from the class
website. This
would be great accept the type of PDF books they are using
are Image PDF not
Text based PDF. They recommended I buy open book or kurzwel
to convert the
documents. I do not have that type of money on hand. Besides
the PDF
documents are password protected. I don't know of any OCR
that will work
with protected PDF. So, presuming the college cannot find
another option,
How do I deal with these PDF Textbooks. They are even worse
then the regular
print one's. At least the OCR software I have can scan
those. The person at
the college is doing their best but they appear to have
limited resources.
Well, any way I would appreciate any ideas on how to over
come the document
conversion issue.

God bless,
Mark
